Tickets & Violations Handled

Whatever the ticket, we know how to fight it

We defend the full range of New York Vehicle & Traffic Law (VTL) charges issued throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Below is what we handle and why fighting matters.

Moving Violations

Common tickets we defend

Speeding

The most common ticket on Long Island highways — from the LIE and Northern State to local roads. Points scale sharply with speed.

3–11 points

Cell Phone & Texting

Using a hand-held device or texting while driving (VTL 1225-c / 1225-d) carries heavy points and insurance impact.

5 points

Red Light & Stop Sign

Failure to stop at a signal, stop sign, or device — including right-on-red and intersection violations.

3 points

Failure to Yield

Not yielding the right-of-way, including to pedestrians and at intersections.

3 points

Improper Lane / Passing

Unsafe lane changes, improper passing, and following too closely (tailgating).

3–4 points

Passing a Stopped School Bus

A serious violation in New York — the penalty was recently raised and now carries 8 points.

8 points

Reckless Driving

A misdemeanor criminal charge — not just a ticket — that can stay on your record.

5 points

Work & Construction Zone

Speeding in a construction zone now carries 8 points regardless of how fast you were going, plus enhanced fines.

8 points

Move Over Law

Failing to move over for emergency, tow, or maintenance vehicles.

3 points
License & Serious Charges

When more than points are at stake

Suspended License (AUO)

Aggravated Unlicensed Operation (VTL 511) is a misdemeanor that now also carries 11 license points — not a simple ticket.

11 pts · misdemeanor

Unlicensed / Unregistered

Driving without a valid license, registration, or inspection, and related equipment charges.

Varies

No Insurance

Operating without insurance (VTL 319) can lead to fines and a license/registration suspension.

Suspension risk

CDL, Commercial & Fleet

Commercial drivers face stricter standards and a conviction can threaten your CDL and job. We also handle fleet defense for companies managing multiple drivers.

DWI / DWAI / DWAI-Drugs

We defend alcohol- and drug-related driving charges (VTL 1192) — serious criminal matters that now also carry 11 DMV points.

Leaving the Scene

Leaving the scene of a property-damage or injury incident under the VTL.

Out-of-state driver? A New York ticket can follow you home. Through interstate agreements, many states record NY convictions and may apply their own points or penalties. We routinely help out-of-state and seasonal drivers resolve Long Island tickets — often without a return trip.
The NY Point System

How points add up — and why it matters

New York assigns points to most moving-violation convictions. Accumulate 11 points within 18 months and the DMV can suspend your license. Hit 6 or more points in 18 months and you owe a Driver Responsibility Assessment — a separate fee on top of fines and rising insurance. New York recently raised the points for several violations — including DWI/DWAI, aggravated unlicensed operation, school-bus passing, and construction-zone speeding.

Point values reflect the current NY DMV point schedule and can change. Verify current values at dmv.ny.gov before relying on them. The Driver Responsibility Assessment is generally $100/year for three years at 6 points, with $25/year added per additional point.

Questions

Frequently asked

Should I just pay my ticket?

Paying a ticket is the same as pleading guilty. It adds points, can raise your insurance for years, and counts toward a possible suspension. A reduction or dismissal often costs less in the long run than the insurance increase from a conviction.

Do I have to go to court?

In many Nassau and Suffolk cases, we can appear on your behalf so you don’t have to take off work or travel. We’ll tell you upfront if your appearance is required.

Can you really get my ticket reduced or dismissed?

Many tickets in Nassau and Suffolk can be negotiated down to fewer points or a non-moving violation, and some are dismissed. No attorney can guarantee a specific result — outcomes depend on the charge, your record, and the facts. We’ll give you an honest assessment.

What does it cost?

We quote a flat fee upfront after reviewing your ticket, so you know the cost before you commit. See the Payment page for details.

I have a CDL — is this different?

Yes. Commercial drivers are held to stricter standards and certain reductions available to regular drivers may not apply. Tell us you hold a CDL on the intake form so we handle your case accordingly.

Not sure how serious your ticket is? Send it over.
